Last night, my roommate and I went out on the town and things got a little out of hand. She ended up being arrested and was taken to the county jail. She called me and said she can’t get a hold of her family and asked if I could bail her out. She’s very nice, but we have only known each other a few months and I don’t have a lot of money… what should I do?

You have to be VERY careful when you are cosigning someone else’s bail bonds. It is a big legal liability. When you cosign for a bail bond, not only are you agreeing to pay the bail bond agent’s fee, you are taking full responsibility that the defendant will go to all required court cases. If your friend flees or doesn’t show up to her hearings, you’ll be on the book of the full bail amount.

A more secure way you could help your friend is by trying to get ahold of her family members yourself and let them know about the situation.
